Storytelling: Aloha ʻĀina Meds

Kū ha’aheo e ku’u Hawai’i

Mamaka kaua o ku’u ‘āina

‘O ke ehu kakahiaka o nā ‘ōiwi o Hawai’i nei

No ku’u lahui e hā’awi pau a i ola mau

Kū ha’aheo e ku’u Hawai’i

Stand up, stand proud of all that you are

Fearless warriors equipped with knowledge

Ho’ohōkūkalani, yes, descendants of the stars

These are lyrics from Aloha ʻĀina Meds by Kuʻulei Music. Kiana, also known as Ku‘ulei Music, is hosting an online workshop where we can learn the depth of the song, to raise funds to keep her ʻOhana kākoʻo mahiʻai on their ʻĀina Aloha. Kiana is an incredible storyteller and community member. She has roots in Pepeʻekeo, where our store and Onomea Hub is located. This is a great opportunity to support her and her ʻOhana, and to connect more deeply with this mele.

Workshop on February 17th, 2025 6PM via Zoom. If you can’t make it sponsor a friend and/or share with your community. Find more information at instagram.com/kuuleimusic and register for the workshop by texting your email address to (808) 940-6968 and Venmo a minimum donation of $22.64 to mauliola8.

SPECIAL

Maker Spotlight: Māwae

Aloha, my name is Chase Mawae. I’m a music lover, my first memory around music is sitting on the floor while my papa sat in a chair in our extra room and played guitar while singing Jeremiah Was A Bullfrog. He still sings, writes songs, and plays slack key. My first memory of wanting to collect music was when I was 5 years old I saw a commercial on TV playing the song Who Let The Dogs Out and I asked for that CD. I also got Ricky Martin’s Livin’ la Vida Loca. I continued collecting CD’s and I spent my middle and high school years finding music on YouTube and making playlists.

Now I’m a DJ and specialize in vinyl records, but not limited to. My focus is music created in Hawaii, from ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi to reggae to pop. I also collect oldies (especially 70s and 80s) and all genres of reggae from roots to digital. I have experience at restaurant, mākeke, and wedding gigs and am available for family parties and other events.
