Yearly Reintroduction

Onomea Country Market supports Hawaiʻi farmers and small businesses by carrying their produce and products. We value living local; we aim to be a small piece in the movement to making Hawaiʻi more sustainable and food sovereign. The more food we eat grown here rather than shipped here, the better!

Providing lāʻau lapaʻau and supporting the makers of it is important to us. From seasonal whole foods and herbs to Hoʻōla Honey infused with medicinals to Māmaki Skin balms, we have a curated selection of plant medicines in a variety of forms. We also carry seeds sourced on Hawaiʻi Island so you can grow your own.

Filling our environments with quality everyday items inspired by the plants, animals, and symbols of Hawaiʻi we love is an uplifting practice. Especially when made sustainably with intention. We keep this in mind as we choose the products we carry like art, kitchen/household items, hats & clothing, stationary, accessories, etc.

Our role as a corner store in Pepeʻekeo: We are honored to be in such a historic location; this building has been here for 100 years, and the Pepeʻekeo and Onomea areas have a long, rich history. We will share some of this in future issues but we are grateful to be apart of the legacy of this place. Being apart of a semi-rural neighborhood, we value providing some essential groceries and snacks for when it’s inconvenient to go to town. We’re also a quick stop for those last minute gift needs and close-by personal shopping. We’re here for the neighborhood, and when you’re passing by from Hilo or Hāmākua.

Our role as a tourism destination: Being located along the scenic route means we are a stop for many visitors. This gives us the opportunity to show sides of Hawaiʻi they may otherwise not see, through educational resources and the stories that come with the products we carry. They also have the opportunity to see the importance of buying locally crafted products and buying from kanaka maoli owned businesses; at our store and throughout their whole trip. For those that are looking for farm tours, farmers markets, and other businesses to support; we can guide them. We also aim to create an environment where people feel they can slow down and have reverence for this place they’re a guest in. We’re lucky to be located in a beautiful space with gardens, outdoor seating, and a country feel which helps facilitate this vision.

Come check out our shop, talk story, get lunch with Piʻilani Kitchen, learn about some history of the location and attend workshops with The Lei Bar, and enjoy Onomea Hub’s beautiful spaces. Stay tuned for Onomea Hub events and keep up with us all on social media. Aloha!
